And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Matthew 6:7-8
I've heard people say, "If God knows what I need before I ask Him, why should I pray?"
That, of course, misses the whole point. We pray because we need to pray. We pray because God has promised to hear us when we do.
We pray because God wants us to pray. But we pray with the confidence of knowing that Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, knows all about our needs, understands them better then we do ourselves, and is ready with the answer even before we bring the need to Him. It didn't take Him by surprise.
The Lord Jesus wasn't saying, "Don't pray." He was saying, "Don't make a big religious spectacle of your prayers; just ask your Father for what you need."
If I don't pray, we miss out on the glorious experience of having my prayers answered. When I do pray, I place myself in the best possible position, that of a beloved child talking to his loving father.
Lord, give me this childlike faith that simply asks, trusting in You the way that a child goes to his father. Amen.
