Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain.
Galatians 2:1-2
Paul had been called by God to be an Apostle. The Lord Jesus had appeared to him personally multiple times over a three year period to teach him, so the Gospel he taught among the Gentiles had been given to him by divine revelation.
But after fourteen years of faithful work together with his partner, Barnabas, the Lord somehow revealed to him that he should go to Jerusalem and meet with the other Apostles, explain what he was teaching and submit to their review.
There is no room in the Kingdom of God for prideful arrogance. That attitude is always evidence of my sinful flesh, which has to be crucified, put to death. My sinful flesh will always cause division; It’s one of the three enemies that get in the way of God’s Kingdom coming and His will being done in my life: the World, the flesh, and the devil.
As it turned out, the other Apostles said they had nothing to add to what Paul was teaching. The Gospel that the Lord had taught them during His earthly life was the same He had revealed to Paul after His resurrection.
But now, by Paul’s simple humility, the pattern was established. There would be only one Gospel being taught, whether to Jews or Gentiles, and no one could say, “Well, that’s just Paul’s opinion.”
Lord, give me a heart of humility, to put my own pride aside and be ready to be corrected by Your Word, even when I’m sure I’m right, for Your Kingdom’s sake. Amen.
