Listen to me, you who know righteousness, the people in whose heart is My Law; fear not the reproach of man, nor be dismayed at their revilings. For the moth will eat them up like a garment, and the worm will eat them like wool, but My righteousness will be forever, and My salvation to all generations.
Isaiah 51:7-8
Behold, You delight in truth in the inward being, and You teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Psalm 51:6
Getting to know God’s Word, coming to understand what is truly right, is a lifelong process. I can read it, hear it preached or taught, fill my mind with it, but that’s just the beginning. Once His Word is in my head, God Himself goes to work to teach me His wisdom in the secret places of my heart.
It’s often an uncomfortable process; sometimes it’s actually painful. It was no coincidence that when He came to live as a Man on earth, the Lord’s occupation was as a carpenter. He goes to work now, remodeling my inner house. Walls are being torn out and rearranged. Doors and windows are being replaced. Most of the work goes on inside, where nobody else can see what’s happening.
As in any remodeling project, the Builder will find some rotten stuff in the foundation that has to be removed, ripped out and replaced with something much more solid, before the rest of the work can proceed.
The world’s opinions and critiques of what God is doing inside of me are meaningless; the world’s values are a distraction at best. God isn’t building for this short span of time at all, but for eternity.
Lord Jesus, teach me wisdom in my secret heart, where no one else can see it. Do Your work inside of me. Rebuild my heart with true repentance and genuine faith, for eternal life beyond this short one. Amen.
