Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the Heir of all things, through whom also He created the world.
Hebrews 1:1-2
The annual celebration of the birth of Christ is coming soon. We do this every year; in fact, pretty much the whole world does. (No one else’s birth splits world history into “before” and “after.”)
But who is He, this one whose birth we remember more than any other?
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power…
Hebrews 1:3
The Bible says here that He is God’s last word to the human race; the very radiance that emanates from the Father; the creator, sustainer and heir of the universe. Since that’s true, it’s only appropriate that we all celebrate this day, to the best of our ability to understand it.
How will you celebrate His day? Most of us gather with family and friends; give gifts to each other, close the shop and take the day off. Others recognize the day by going to work so that others can go home and celebrate; they serve the community, as their gift.
Some fast and pray; others overspend, overeat and party. I think either one is appropriate! However you do it, get your heart ready to receive Him!
Lord Jesus, I’m only beginning now to understand who You are. Forgive my ignorance and failure to recognize You. Open my heart to see, to lay hold of and receive You in a worthy manner, and to prepare to celebrate Your birth in an appropriate way this year. Amen.
