Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known

Saturday 1/17/2026 Devotional

Know that the Lord has set apart the godly for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him…
In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:3, 8

I was driving on a two-lane highway in southern Mexico after dark. (That’s never a good idea, but at the time it was urgent.) I had been over that same road just a week before. In the intervening week the asphalt had been resurfaced but they hadn’t gotten around to painting the lines on it yet, so the road itself was completely invisible; not even the headlights reflected off of it’s completely black surface.

At one point I had to pass a semitrailer. Because of the blackness of the road surface and the dark of the night I couldn’t tell until I was halfway past the truck that we were on a mountain curve, just as another semi came barreling around that curve, hurtling toward us.

I couldn’t get past the truck on my right, without flying over the cliff. There wasn’t time to get back in my lane before the oncoming truck would be on us. I remember crying out, “¡Dios! ¡Dios! ¡Dios! ¡Sácanos de a aquí!”

Suddenly we were back in the right lane behind the truck I had been passing and the oncoming truck was roaring past us on the left. I have no idea how we got there.

The peace and security that come with knowing that you are where God wants you to be, doing what God wants you to do, are beyond description. You not only have the security of His protection and guidance but the assurance of answered prayer when you call out to Him. You can rest easy and go about your work.

Thank You, Lord, for setting me apart for Yourself, for protecting me, and for hearing my prayers. Thank You that I can rest, knowing that I am in Your hands. Lord, keep me close today, sensitive to Your Word, guided by Your Spirit. Amen.
