“Moses and the Prophets” is simply a Hebrew way of referring to the Bible. If people refuse to believe what the Bible says, no miracle, no matter how impressive, will convince them and bring about repentance and faith.
We’ve seen countless miracles in answer to prayer over the years, including resurrections, but that’s not what brings people to Christ. Miracles and answers to prayer are special gifts from God to His beloved children; they aren’t intended to convert unbelievers. What changes hearts is the Word of God, working in the hearts of people who hear it and believe. If people won’t believe the Bible, they won’t be convinced by miracles, either.
There are plenty of fake miracles and fake miracle workers out there, too: sometimes they are innocent entertainment and sometimes they are attempts to deceive and gain followers. Sometime even preachers of the Gospel have fallen into this pattern, so it’s perfectly reasonable that people approach miracle accounts with a healthy skepticism
That’s okay; we pray anyway because we know God listens, and we expect answers, because God has promised. Doubters will doubt, but believers, whose hearts have been touched by the Holy Spirit working through His Word, will find comfort and be strengthened in their faith.
Lord, open my heart to receive, believe, understand, trust and obey Your Word. Keep my eyes firmly fixed on You and Your promises. Amen.
