But Jesus answered them, "You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.”
Matthew 22:29
The Sadducees were a group of theologians, Bible teachers, who didn’t believe certain things that the Bible teaches. They were very religious and scrupulously ethical in their personal lives, but picked and chose from the Bible what they liked and rejected anything they didn’t agree with or understand.
They came to the Lord Jesus with what they thought was a really crushing argument, but this was His reply: "You’re wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.“
These two things are essential if I am to follow Jesus: I must get to know the Bible, and I must learn to trust in God’s power to fulfill His Word.
God’s Word awakens faith in my heart, and as I come to trust it and obey it, I see His power at work in my own life; I come to know and experience His power to change me, His powerful, redeeming grace in my own life and in others’, and I know His answers to prayer as I bring my needs to Him. He keeps His Word, my faith grows, and so I can follow Him.
Father, You have kept Your promises to me and taught me to trust in You. Create in me a heart that responds in quick obedience to Your Word, and trusts in Your promises. Lead me on, Lord Jesus!
