He said to them, "…truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you."
Matthew 17:20
Whenever the Lord Jesus says, “Truly I say to you,” the next words out of His mouth are always one of those things that people ever since have struggled to understand and accept as true. It means, “What I’m about to say is going to be hard for you to understand/accept/believe, but it’s true.”
This is a good example. It’s one of the least understood things that our Lord ever said. Many (like Master Yoda) take it to mean that if I just believe something hard enough, it will happen.
But faith isn’t just believing that something will happen. Faith is trusting in God and in His Word. Faith changes my life so that I want to live His way. Faith is trusting in a person, not trusting in the fulfillment of mydesires, but His.
If I simply and genuinely trust God and His promises, no obstacle can stand in my way. Nothing can keep me from fulfilling His purpose in my life - and that, of course, is the difficulty. My faith is too often more in myself than in God, more in science and the principles that govern this physical world than in God’s Word.
Lord, give me faith - even if it’s small, like a grain of mustard seed. Keep my eyes fixed on Your promises and my heart trusting in You. Let Your will, Your purpose, and Your plan be fulfilled in my life. Let nothing stand in my way, in my quest to know You and live for You. Amen!
