Knowing the Savior and Making Him Known

Thursday 5/14/2026 Devotional

Although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools…
Romans 1:21-22

When we reject God and refuse to hear His Word our hearts become foolish. Our ability to reason, to think rationally, becomes obscured, fuzzy, and dark, because we have taken away the foundation for logic and morality; without God there is no purpose to existence and no basis for right and wrong.

We begin to listen to utter nonsense and think it sounds sublimely wise. The convoluted gibberish of confused philosophers and con artists sounds to us like reasoned thought.

We convince ourselves that we are the wisest of all and therefore anyone who disagrees with us must just be stupid. We violently oppose anyone who contradicts us, out of a secret fear that they might expose the utter foolishness of what we have decided to believe. Sinful pride and arrogance grow alongside our descent into foolish and self-destructive behavior.

God, in His mercy, breaks into our darkness and offers to reconnect us with the light of truth and reality. Forgiveness, restoration, and freedom are available when we come to Jesus.

It’s humiliating to admit that we’ve been wrong, we have come to love our sin, even though we know, deep down, that it’s destroying us. But once we get over the humiliation, and the light shines on our darkened hearts, we see things for what they are.

Lord God, in Your mercy break through the confusion, the darkness, the attachment to sin that enslaves body and soul. Forgive, restore, and renew me for Jesus’ sake, and guide my feet into the right way. Amen.
