Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?
Hebrews 1:14
God’s holy angels are described here as “ministering spirits.” The Greek word for “ministering” (leitourgikós) is used only this one time in the New Testament. It’s where we get the English word “liturgy,” meaning leading the community in worship in the church service.
But in ancient Greek the word meant someone who was performing a role of public service at his own expense. That sounds like our Arizona Rangers, who serve the community without pay, buy their own uniforms and equipment, pay for their own insurance, and even drive their own cars, all at their own expense. They don’t just go out and do random good deeds; they’re carefully assigned and monitored by the authority under whom they willingly serve.
But angels aren’t men, they’re spirits, created by the King of the Universe to serve for the benefit of His people, in fulfillment of God’s own purpose for us. They don’t just wander around and do random good deeds; they’re sent and assigned by Him, as He sees fit.
When the Savior was born and presented to the world, a whole army of angels was assigned to form a choir and lead a public worship service, the most beautiful liturgy imaginable, singing or shouting or chanting together, “Glory to God in the Highest, and on earth peace to men, with whom He is pleased.”
Lord, thank You for sending these “ministering spirits” to serve for my benefit, today. Keep me close, as I serve You, and this community on Your behalf, knowing that I’m surrounded and attended by Your holy angels.
Amen.
